Area
Ayia Napa is situated on the southeastern coast of the island.
Once a sleepy fishing village, Ayia Napa is now most renowned
for its lively night life, its excellent choice of shops, restaurants
and bars, its picturesque harbour and of course its beautiful
beaches. In fact, the coastline either side of Ayia Napa is
decorated with arguably the most beautiful beaches found on
the island with their fine white sand and clear turquoise waters.
But Ayia Napa is also home to significant history, including
its medieval Monastery that was built around 1500 AD, originally
as a women’s convent. West of Ayia Napa, a short 15-minute
walk from the Aeneas, the Department of Antiquities has completed
the excavation of 19 rock-cut tombs dating back to the Hellenistic
and Roman periods. To the east of the tombs a small sanctuary
has been excavated while part of an ancient quarry next to
it has also been uncovered. Cape Greco, to the east of Ayia
Napa, is a distinctive coastline with its imposing 10-metre
see cliffs which feature natural caves sculpted by the sea
into the rock.
